Even explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who traversed the area as they made their way to the Pacific Ocean in 1805-1806, knew a great place to call home when they saw it. In his journal in 1806, Lewis noted, "indeed the only desirable situation for a settlement which I have seen on the West side of the Rocky Mountains ."

Vancouver became the first non-native settlement in the Pacific Northwest when, Nineteen years after Lewis and Clark 's journey, the Hudson 's Bay Company established Fort Vancouver , now operated by the U.S. Park Service.
